WHAT IS PILATES?

Pilates is a form of exercise that strengthens the body through controlled movements, focused breathing and strong body awareness. The training places particular emphasis on the body’s core muscles – including the abdominals, back and pelvic floor – which act as the body’s stabilizing center.

When the core muscles become stronger, they create a solid foundation for the rest of the body. This can improve posture, balance, stability and flexibility, while training the body in a safe and functional way.

How does a Pilates workout work?

In a typical Pilates class, you perform slow and controlled movements with a strong focus on precision and quality in each exercise. The exercises are often performed on a mat and combine strength, mobility and stability training.

Breathing is an essential element of Pilates training. By coordinating breathing with movement, Pilates helps create a stronger connection between body and mind, making the workout both physically strengthening and mentally focusing.

Benefits of Pilates

Pilates training can help you:

  • strengthen your core and overall body stability

  • improve posture and alignment

  • increase flexibility and mobility

  • enhance balance and body control

  • reduce tension in the back and shoulders

Because of these benefits, many people choose Pilates workouts as a way to build strength, improve body awareness and support long-term physical well-being.

PILATES FOR BEGINNERS

One of the great advantages of Pilates at Ohmyoga in Copenhagen is that the training can be adapted to all levels. The exercises can be modified in difficulty, allowing both beginners and more experienced practitioners to benefit from the workout.

If you are new to Pilates training, you will typically start with the fundamental exercises. Here you learn how to activate the core muscles, work with proper alignment, and understand the basic movement patterns that form the foundation of Pilates.

Because of this structured approach, Pilates for beginners is a safe and effective way to start building strength and body awareness.

Pilates is therefore an ideal form of exercise if you want to:

  • build strength in a safe and controlled way

  • improve your posture and body alignment

  • increase flexibility and mobility

  • train the body in a more functional and balanced way

Benefits of Ohm Mat Pilates

Strenghtens the core. Pilates focuses on developing a strong core, which is essential for overall body stability and balance. A stronger core can also significantly improve posture and reduce strain on the back.

Improves flexibility. Regular pilates workouts helpt lengthen and mobilize the muscles, improving overall flexibility and range of motion

Enhances posture and body awareness. Through controlled movements and focused breathing, Pilates helps you become more aware of your body, leading to better posture and more efficient movement patterns in everyday life.

Supports long-term physical health. Because Pilates is a low-impact workout, it is suitable for many people and can be practiced regularly to maintain strength, mobility and overall well-being.

CAN YOU BUILD MUSCLES WITH PILATES?

While Pilates is not the same as heavy weightlifting, it is a highly effective way to develop long, lean, and strong muscles. In Pilates matwork, you use your own body weight for resistance, which helps strengthen your core, arms, legs, and back. The controlled movements and focus on precision activate smaller stabilizing muscles that are often overlooked in traditional workouts.

If you are looking for Pilates in Copenhagen, joining a Mat Pilates class at Ohmyoga can help you build strength, improve posture, and enhance flexibility all while keeping your joints safe and supported.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN MAT PILATES AND REFORMER PILATES?

Are you wondering what the difference is between Reformer Pilates and traditional Mat Pilates? While both focus on strength, control, and body awareness, there are some key differences.

Mat Pilates: Traditional mat-based Pilates is performed on the floor using a mat and sometimes small props like bands, balls, or rings. It focuses heavily on core strength, stability, and controlled movement using only your own body weight as resistance.

Reformer Pilates: Reformer Pilates uses a reformer machine with springs and straps to add resistance and support. In a Reformer class, you can perform a wider variety of exercises that strengthen, stretch, and tone the body in a highly controlled way. The adjustable resistance makes it suitable for both beginners and advanced practitioners.

SHOULD YOU CHOOSE A MAT PILATES CLASS OR A REFORMER PILATES CLASS AT OHM YOGA?

If you’re looking for effective yet challenging practice that builds strength and improves posture, Pilates Reformer classes are a great option. Mat Pilates is ideal if you prefer a mat-based workout with focus on bodyweight exercises, while Reformer Pilates provides more versatility, precision, and resistance training.

At Ohmyoga in Copenhagen, you can explore both forms and discover which style best supports you and your body. Whether on the mat or on the reformer, Pilates is an effective way to strengthen your core, improve flexibility, and boost your overall well-being.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN MAT PILATES AND YOGA?

If you’ve ever wondered how Mat Pilates compares to yoga, you’re not alone. At Ohmyoga, we offer both yoga classes and Mat Pilates classes, giving you the chance to explore which practice best supports your body and lifestyle. While both focus on body awareness, strength, and flexibility, they each offer a unique experience.

Mat Pilates: Mat Pilates is a dynamic workout performed on the mat, using your own body weight for resistance. A Mat Pilates class strengthens the core, improves posture, and tones muscles through controlled and precise movements. Unlike yoga, Pilates is not rooted in spirituality but in functional movement and body mechanics, making it especially effective for building strength and stability.

Yoga: Yoga is a holistic practice that combines physical postures, breathing techniques, and mindfulness. In our yoga classes, the focus is on flexibility, balance, and connecting movement with breath. Many practice yoga not only for the physical benefits but also for stress relief, mental clarity, and a sense of inner balance and peace.

SHOULD YOU CHOOSE A MAT PILATES OR A YOGA CLASS?

Both yoga and Mat Pilates complement each other beautifully. Yoga enhances flexibility and mindfulness, while Mat Pilates focuses on core strength, alignment, and stability. Many of our members at Ohmyoga enjoy combining the two practices for a well-rounded routine that supports both body and mind.

At Ohmyoga Copenhagen, we invite you to experience both yoga classes and Mat Pilates classes, and discover how they can bring balance, strength, and focus into your everyday life.

Mat Pilates is Pilates training performed on a mat without machines. The focus is on:

  • Core strength
  • Stability and balance
  • Flexibility and body control

The exercises often use only body weight or small props such as balls, resistance bands, or rings, making it suitable for all levels. Mat Pilates is classic Pilates on a mat — simple, effective, and adaptable.

Yoga combines movement, stretching, breath, and mindfulness, focusing on flexibility, balance, strength, and mental calm. It can be both dynamic (flow) and more still (meditation).

Pilates focuses on core strength, body control, and precision. Exercises can be performed on a mat or on a machine (Reformer). There is less emphasis on meditation and more on functional strength and stability.

Yoga strengthens both body and mind, while Pilates primarily strengthens the body — especially the core muscles.

Everyone can practice Mat Pilates — both beginners and experienced practitioners. The exercises can be adapted so you can work at your own pace and level.

Mat Pilates improves posture, strengthens the core and muscles throughout the body, increases flexibility and balance, and enhances body awareness. It is gentle on the joints and back, while still providing an effective workout.
