WHAT IS YIN YOGA?

Yin Yoga is a gentle and slow-paced style of yoga that focuses on stretching and stimulating the body’s deeper connective tissues such as tendons, ligaments and fascia, rather than primarily working the muscles as in more dynamic yoga styles.

Unlike energetic yoga styles that build strength through continuous movement, Yin Yoga consists of longer-held postures, typically maintained for 3–5 minutes or even longer. These poses are usually practiced seated or lying on the floor and create a deep, mindful stretch that targets the body’s connective tissue.

The goal of Yin Yoga is to improve flexibility, increase joint mobility and develop greater body awareness. At the same time, the slow and meditative nature of the practice has a calming and restorative effect on the mind, helping to reduce stress and release physical tension.

A central principle of Yin Yoga is finding the balance between stretch and relaxation, encouraging practitioners to soften into the pose and gradually release resistance in the body.

Yin Yoga is suitable for all ages and experience levels, and can be especially beneficial for those looking to improve flexibility, reduce stiffness and increase body awareness. It is also an excellent complement to more active lifestyles or training methods such as fitness, CrossFit, running or sports, where dynamic movement can be balanced with mindful recovery and deep stretching.

SOME YIN YOGA POSES AND WHY THEY ARE GOOD:

Yin yoga consists of long-held, passive poses that target deep connective tissues like fascia, ligaments, and tendons. Here are some common yin yoga poses and their benefits:

  • Butterfly Pose (Baddha Konasana): Opens the hips and stretches inner thighs, helping to increase flexibility and release tension in the lower body.
  • Dragon Pose (Anjaneyasana variation): Deeply stretches the hip flexors and quadriceps, improving hip mobility and circulation.
  • Caterpillar Pose (Paschimottanasana variation): Stretches the spine, hamstrings, and calves, promoting relaxation and spinal flexibility.
  • Sphinx Pose: A gentle backbend that stimulates the lower spine and supports posture while calming the nervous system.
  • Child’s Pose (Balasana): Provides a restful stretch for the back, hips, and shoulders, encouraging mindfulness and stress reduction.

These yin yoga poses help improve flexibility, strengthen connective tissue, enhance joint mobility, and reduce stress. Practicing yin yoga at Ohmyoga in Copenhagen allows you to experience these benefits while cultivating mindfulness, relaxation, and body awareness.

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN YIN YOGA AND OTHER YOGA STYLES

Yin Yoga differs from many other yoga styles through its slow pace and focus on deep, long-held stretches. While dynamic styles such as Vinyasa Yoga, Hatha Yoga or Power Yoga often emphasize active movement and muscular strength, Yin Yoga works deeper into the body’s connective tissue, joints and fascia.

In a Yin Yoga class, postures are typically held for 3–5 minutes, allowing the body to gradually release tension and improve flexibility over time. In more dynamic yoga styles, practitioners move more frequently from one pose to another in a flowing sequence, with a stronger focus on strength, balance and physical intensity.

For this reason, Yin Yoga is often the perfect complement to more active yoga styles or physical training. At Ohmyoga in Copenhagen, many students combine Yin Yoga with other classes, as it helps the body recover, release tension and cultivate mental calm.

This balance between active yoga practice and deep relaxation is one of the reasons why Yin Yoga has become one of the most popular yoga styles in modern yoga practice.

Yin Yoga offers many benefits because the poses are held for a longer time and work deeply within the body. It is especially beneficial for:

  • Increased flexibility and mobility – particularly in the hips, back, and legs.
  • Release of connective tissue and deeper structures – not just the muscles.
  • Stress reduction – the slow pace activates the parasympathetic nervous system.
  • Mental calm and mindfulness – you have time to settle and connect with your body.
  • Balancing an active lifestyle – Yin complements strength training and more dynamic yoga styles.

In short, Yin Yoga promotes deep relaxation, flexibility, and a more balanced body.

Yes, but very little. In Yin Yoga you move slowly between poses, and the poses themselves are typically held for 2–5 minutes (sometimes longer). The focus is not on flow or dynamic movement, but on giving the body time to release tension and work deeply into the connective tissue.

Yoga:

  • A broad term that covers many styles—from calm (e.g., Hatha) to more dynamic and strength-based styles (e.g., Vinyasa).
  • The focus can be on strength, mobility, breathing, and flowing between poses.

Yin Yoga:

  • A slow, meditative style where poses are held for several minutes.
  • Works deeply with the connective tissue, promoting relaxation and increased mobility
  • Minimal movement—the focus is on stillness, presence, and giving the body time.

For Yin Yoga, it’s best to choose comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that does not restrict movement, since the poses are held for a longer time.

  • Soft leggings or sweatpants
  • A loose T-shirt or long-sleeve top
  • A light sweater or socks if you tend to get cold during the longer poses

Choose clothing that provides comfort and warmth, so you can fully relax in the poses.
